Brother Lou dropped off a boxful of samples laste week, and first up was a foursome from Napa Valley’s Kuleto:
Kuleto Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2009. Grade=Amazing. This deep, dark, rich Cab is full-bodied with loads of chewy tannins, blackberry and black currant fruits, cassis, tobacco and graphite, finishing up bold and multilayered.
Kuleto Native Son Red Wine Napa Valley 2009. Grade=Amazing. A powerfully-concentrated blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Zinfandel, this full-bodied red gives you surprisingly good balance in its display of black fruits, dark spices and oak.
Kuleto India Ink Red Wine Napa Valley 2009. Grade=Outstanding. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in a full-out new oak assault on the senses – you have dense, unctuous black fruits, hints of black cherry compote, tar, mocha, tobacco and toasty oak. This is a big boy.
Kuleto Frog Prince Red Wine Napa Valley 2009. Grade=Outstanding. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Petit Verdot join forces in this hulking, brooding demonstration of oenologic machismo. Full-bodied on steroids, this big monster comes off a bit muddy at first, but settles into a seriously hedonistic display of dark fruits, dark spices and smoldering oak.
