STARTING OPENING DAY ON THE INJURED RESERVE: SOLO IN THE STUDIO WITH AN ASSORTMENT OF GRAPE JUICE FROM THE WEST COAST

As a bit of a warmup on this quiet Thursday in the Studio, I dove into some samples RNDC/Barkley sales manager Zach “Ways n’” Means dropped off as well as a sample from Tramonte rep K.I., while it seems everyone in Cincinnati is at the ball park for Opening Day:

Flor de Campo by Sanford Chardonnay Santa Barbara County 2010.  Grade=Outstanding.  Stunning Chardonnay with nuances lemon and pineapple notes, hints of Bartlett pear, Golden Delicious apple, touches of mineral and slight creamy vanilla and oak undertones.

Flor de Campo by Sanford Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County 2010.  Grade=Outstanding.  Bright red raspberry, cherry and cranberry notes, with elements of cherry cola, cinnamon, white pepper and earth undertones.

David Girard Grenache Premium Selection El Dorado 2010.  Grade=Outstanding.  Medium-bodied red with spicy red fruits, sassafrass, cinnamon and oak spices.  Medium tannins show off hints of coffee bean, red flowers, dried herbs and red currants.

Stonecap Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley 2009.  Grade=Very Good.  Splashy black cherry and red currant notes, some black pepper and chocolate, finishing up with brown baking spices and toasted oak.

Stonecap Riesling Columbia Valley 2009.  Grade=Outstanding.  Very pretty white wine, semi-dry with characters of mineral, honeyed stone fruit, white spices and white flowers.  Touches of lime and Chinese Five Spice come through in the finish.
