Diving into the week, having been left the keys to the wine department Chevy so to speak, I made it a point to get to the ever-growing mountain of samples left to us courtesy of our crackerjack sales reps, beginning with a few we have already brought into the store:
Bitch Bubbly Spain NV. Grade= Good. Sweeter style of sparkling with hints of strawberry Faygo and hints of whipped cream, sundae nuts and cherry-flavored gummy bears.
Bitch White Aragon 2010. Grade=Good. Simple, easy-drinking white wine from Airen with hints of citrus notes, slight cilantro, mint and mineral.
Torbreck Woodcutter’s Semillon Barossa Valley 2010. Grade=Outstanding. Crisp, clean, refreshing white wine with grassy notes, lemon, verbena, pear and grapefruit.
Airfield Estates Bombshell Red Yakima Valley 2009. Grade=Outstanding. Medium-bodied red blend of Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot with spicy red and black fruits and touches of baking spice.
Torbreck Cuvee Juveniles Barossa Valley 2009. Grade=Outstanding. Medium-bodied red blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mataro with sweet cherry pie, rhubarb, sassafrass, saffron, plum, red coffee bean and toast.
Some Young Punks The Squid’s Fist Barossa Valley 2011. Grade=Outstanding. A splashy, juicy medium-bodied blend of Sangiovese and Shiraz with notes of meaty, smoky cherry and plum, tomato puree, pepper, blood orange and plum skin.
Locations E1 for Espana Red Wine 2010. Grade=Very Good. On the sweeter side, though finishing dry, a decent red blend from Dave Phinney of Orin Swift fame. Shows notes of black cherry jam, vanilla, cocoa, carmelized sugar, and charred wood.
Torbreck Woodcutter’s Shiraz Barossa Valley 2010. Grade=Outstanding+. Young but a terrific, balanced Barossa Shiraz with dark red and black fruits, balsamic, turmeric and a little duck fat.
Airfield Estates Runway Syrah Yakima Valley 2010. Grade=Outstanding. Spicier style, more in league with the Rhone than domestic; very nice red with white pepper, black cherry, blueberry, mocha, hickory smoke, root beer and dried herbs.
Airfield Estates Runway Cabernet Sauvignon Yakima Valley 2010. Grade=Outstanding+. Medium-to-full-bodied Cab, a great value. Displays notes of black currant, blackberry, plum, cocoa, cedar smoke, tobacco, clove and espresso.
